November 11th, 2008 — malayalam movie review

Twenty20 is made only for sharing screen space of stars. Starts with crap comedy scenes of the makers’ favorite actors. Comedy for the sake of comedy, cliched to the max. Siby _Udayan tried to write a script based on three major characters, but fails miserably to form a script and ends up like a screen sharing show. The formula is again the revenge of hero (heroes here), away from the clutches of law.
The writers have tried to include enough punch lines between the three stars(Mammootty, Mohanlal & Suresh Gopi), which aims only the fans’ claps. As the film enters the second half, even the director forgets some events of the first half. Then starts the attempt for a climax which can give space for the three actors, and ends up as a mess.
Its only the screen presence that matters according to Joshy and Siby Udayan. They even try to imitate Tamil stunts (one hilarious jumping scene of Mohanlal is there with pathetic graphics). The two songs are not upto mark. Some positive sparks are there, in the scenes of Mohanlal in court. Nothing else was impressive.

After a long gap, got to see a film with good substance and freshness in malayalam. All credits goes to director Ranjith. Hats off to him, this time the director Ranjith outplays the writer Ranjith.
The very first shot itself gives us the mood and treatment of the film. Ranjith has taken good care in selecting the BGM for the shot and the entire film. The film revolves around three main characters, that of Prithviraj, Anoop Menon and Priyamani. The real hero in the film is the story itself. Once more hats off to Ranjith.
Ranjith has adapted good narrative style for telling the story, goes to the flash back and present time in between, that too through different characters. The script is an above average one and could have been made more sharp.
Very good performances from Priyamani, Prithviraj and Anoop Menon. Anoop Menon definitely deserves good roles in malayalam cinema. The expression of Prithviraj, while he opens the hospital door deserves a special mention, and good improvement in dialog delivery. Priyamani and Anoop excelled in the climax sequence.
Ranjith proves a director’s craft especially in the climax scenes. Undoubtedly Thirakkatha the best film from him and is a must watch for all film lovers.

Happened to get the review copy of “Velipaadukal”, a short film directed by Dr Shahul Ameen.
The film tells the story of a society that may happen in the future. Its about the ethics and values of life and not about the outlook of the world in the future. We can call the narration is symbolical in one way. But in another perspective, some of the facts are taken in a realistic way. The film points out some of the loss cultural values in its extremity.
Velipaadukal depicts the blind acceptance of stupid political and religious beliefs. In the form of “scientific religion”, the film portrays current social issues itself. The relationships become materialistic and women are getting used only for physical pleasures and reproduction. They are treated like vegetables and becomes completely illeterate. The way they recycle dead bodies becomes a spark for the lead charcter to think apart from the religion. The rebels of the religion are without ideologies and director Shahul Ameen has succeeded in relating it with todays politics in a way. The further experiences of the lead character Lintu form the rest of the story.
The film starts well, but the script is a little bit weak as it progresses, and especially the regarding the scenes leading to the climax. The final scene of the lead character should have been picturized in a more careful way. Above average performances are there from all the lead characters. As a whole, the effort from the young film makers have to be appreciated.
