Calcutta News Review

Calcutta News

Blessy’s new film Calcutta News tells the story of a village girl who gets cheated by her husband and thrown away into the insecurities of Calcutta city. Through this film, Blessy reveals the unseen picture of brothels in the city of Calcutta. Meera Jasmine plays the village girl named Krishna Priya and Dileep plays the hero Ajith Thomas, a repoter of “Calcutta News” channel. Vimala Raman, Manasa etc consists the rest of the cast.

The film starts well into an award function, where Ajith receives an award for his mobile-documentary “The shadows of Calcutta”. Krishna Priya’s story is revealed on the screen through this documentary. A malayalee guy (Indrajith) gets killed in the streets of Calcutta and reporter Ajith finds that guy’s previous visuals in his mobile cam. Thus he traces down the wife Krishna. The Malayalee Samajam takes over her. How Ajith finds out the mystery behind Krishna Priya’s tragedy forms the rest of the story.

The main strength of Calcutta News is the directional skills of Blessy. Blessy brings an entirely new technicians for the post production work. The editing and special effects deserves special applauses. S. Kumar’s camera is also of top class. Blue screen technique is also used by the visual effects team for the visual perfection of the film. Blessy has chosen nice locations in Calcutta for the picturisation. The well directed climax is the greatest plus point of this film. Meera and Dileep has done a good job with their roles. We can hope that Dileep may not speak English in his forthcoming movies.

Eventhough director Blessy excells, writer Blessy falls flat. The film takes off well but it loses its entire momentum after Krishna Priya’s taking over by the organisation. The story line stands still till it reaches the doors of the climax. In between, Blessy brings black magic and mental disorders to move the story forward, but in vain. The romantic scenes are just average but the songs are good and hummable. Blessy repeates the same mistake which he did in Palunku, that he has a theme to present but the script doesn’t have the strength to carry the film till the climax.

In short, Calcutta News is a good film though it doesnt have a strong script.

Verdict 6.5/10
